Setting Flagstone on Two Types of Foundation is Possible...
...but there could be future problems.
Anna from Boulder, Colorado has a question about setting flagstone on concrete and crushed rock.
I have a cement slab that I am going to place flagstone on
and have a crusher fine base next to that that I have flattened down. I was
going to lay the flagstone on the cement slab first then work the pieces out to
the crusher fine but lay the flagstone without cement in the crusher fine. Is
there any special technique I should know about so that the finsihed product
looks like one big patio, and not have the joint where the slab meets the sand
show?
I also have siding coming right down to the flagstone, should I put some
caulking where the stone meets the siding of the house?
Any advice you would have would be great.
Thanks
Anna
Answer:
Dear Anna,
Hello fellow Coloradoan. We're here in Lakewood, Colorado.
You can continue the flagstone over the crushed rock. Try to compact the crushed rock as much as possible; however, where the stone will be laid on the crushed rock, you'll eventually get hairline cracks in the joints. That is due to the different settling of the concrete and the crushed rock. If you don't mind replacing joints every few years, it might be ok to do.
I would also caulk where the siding meets the stone or you could put metal flashing under the siding and have it rest on the stone.
Let us know what you think and great luck!
