securing overhanging flagstone face place to firepit

I built a fire pit using stacked flagstone. Now I want to put a top plate on the overhangs and will be strong enough to stay in place if people sit on it. How should I secure the top plate? The top plate will over hang the walls by a few inches on the outside.

Dear Wade,

You can put some cap stone on top of your walls and secure it with cement. Your local stoneyard can cut that for you. You just give them the dimensions, and they'll do that for you.

We recommend using Portland Type I-II cement mixed with masonry sand.
