Recovering slate stepping stones

I am recovering some sunken slate stepping stones from the yard of the house I just bought. Some are intact, but most are brittle and flaking heavily. There are already tons of very brittle, almost paper-like flakes in the soil. Wondering if I need to remove all the flakes from the soil or if I can simply re-bury them and let them return to nature?? Thanks!

i would not worry about the flaked stone--but what i would do is pull the stones up and before resetting them put whats called stone dust(ground fine stone under each one...that will keep the moisture away from your stepping stones so the wont deteriate further.
