Patio overgrown with grass

I rented a house with a great backyard. The one problem with it -- the previous tenants allowed grass to cover 90% of the stone/sand patio. I love to cookout and this area is right outside of my kitchen where a grill and my patio furniture would be great. I just don't know what my options are.

Without pouring too much money into a rented house, what can I do? I would love a flagstone patio. Do I have to dig up the existing stone and replace it with new stone (obviously opting for concrete this time), or can flagstone be placed on top of the existing stone. Because of the amount of grass on top of the patio, it's hard to see many of the stones. Is it possible to kill that much grass and just fill the current patio with concrete? It's hard to even notice that there's a patio under all of the grass.

Man, I hope you guys still man this e-mail account. I would really LOVE some help!
