Montauk Blue Slate

I am installing 1 " Montauk slate on a solid concrete ( 10 x4.5) pad at my front door. This area gets no sun in the winter and faces North. This is a freeze thaw zone. What should I use, mortar or portland cement to install the slate? Thanks

I would use a Type S mortar, which combines portland cement,sand,and hydrated lime. This will give you the strength and flexibility you are looking for.
