Is Tennessee flagstone strong and durable enough for a natural walkway in NC?

I'm buildling a walkway using flagstone and river rocks in my backyard in NC. I like the pinkish color of the TN flagstone, but I'm concerned that it isn't durable enough for a walkway. It's consistency is like sandstone and I'm concerned it will deteriorate over time with weather exposure and natural wear. I love the color and the large flat pieces. I was considering using an 1 1/2 width, but it is also available in a larger width (more digging for me and more expensive/less coverage!). Any advice would be appreciated. We are hoping not to have to repeat this project for the next 20 years or so!
