Installing flagstone edging beside sidewalk

Good Morning:

I want to install flagstone edging beside my front walkway (about 5 - 6 feet on each side in length)

My son and a buddy are my workman ... do they need to dig down, install gravel .... they will be putting about 3 - 5 layers of stacked flagstone

I live in Houston, so freezing is not an issue.

They should dig down and establish a solid foundation. That will make your wall more stable.
