How deep do you set the flagstone in sand base

I'm going to use 2 inch flagstone to lay a new patio. How deep do you set the flagstone into the sand? I have mostly a clay foundation but will add a good 3-4' class 5 base and then 2-3 inches of sand. Is it recommended to just go into the sand half the width of the stone? THanks

Dear Bryan,

It sounds like you have everything in place.

You will lay your stone on the sand base and then fill the joints. You adjust your stone with the sand base to make it level.
