Flagstone Patio Question

John from Las Vegas, Nevada has a Flagstone Patio Question:

I am installing about a 600 sq. ft. flagstone patio. I have dug down 5" - 5 1/2" of soil for the placement of the sand and flagstone. Do I need to have about 2" of gravel for drainage and then 3 " of sand? My flagstone is about 2" thick. How many inches of dirt should I remove from my project so the flagstone is flush ( and draining away from with my patio and grass curbing?

Answer:

Dear John,

If you have a lot of water in that area, it would be a good idea to put 2" of gravel down and then 2" of sand and that should take care of your drainage problem if you have any.

It sounds like you just need to dig down another inch and then you'll be flush with 2" of gravel, 2" of sand, and 2" thick flagstone.

Great luck!

David and Hans
