Flagstone Patio Question

Margaret from Texas had a question about putting a kitchen island over her sand flagstone patio.

Question:

We had a flagstone patio installed last March. The contractor did not use mortar, or very little mortar. It was installed over sand. I have a new contactor who is builing us an outdoor kitchen island out of stone. He said that we need to tear out the patio and redo. There were cracks and spaces in tne patio, and we asked if it could be repaired. I am confused. I now see that flagstone can be installed over sand. Please help!

Answer:

Dear Margaret, If you are happy with the existing flagstone patio that is laid in sand, then I see no need to tear it out. However, where you are putting the kitchen island, you need to have a concrete footing under it to prevent any shifting of the island. You cannot lay any kind of structure on sand and hope for it to be stable.

Great luck!

David and Hans

P.S. If you do the island, we would love to put any pictures on the site.
