Flagstone On Top Of Wood. Can You Do It?
We received a question about putting flagstone on top of a wood deck.
Question:
Can I put flagstone on a wooden deck if the
framing is made out of pressure treated 4x4s and the flooring is made out of 2
layers of 3/4 inch pressure treated plywood (for a total thickness of 1.1/2
inches)then a layer of mesh and then the flagstone set in cement. the size of
the deck is approximate 19'x 27'
Answer:
Dear Butch,
It depends on how heavy the stone that you get. Go to your local stoneyard and find out what that square footage will weigh in the 1" to 1 1/4" thickness. Then add the weight of the sand and cement. You're going to need
roughly 6 tons of stone or more. Then see if you have enough support in your structure to handle all of that weight.
You'll need to put a membrane over the wood otherwise the wood will swell up
from moisture. Then you'll need to put lath on top of the membrane. You might be able to avoid the membrane if the wood is treated to handle a lot of moisture. If not, just be safe and use a membrane.
Great luck!
