flagstone over old concrete

I have a partially covered 8 x 12 porch. I tore off the old indoor/outdoor carpeting and the concrete is damaged in spots where the rug came up. Is there a prep material that needs to be applied to the uneven concrete before installing the flagstone?

possible metal lathe

Dear Barbara,

It depends on how big the cracks are. If the cracks are fairly small and normal settling from concrete, then you can just lay your stone over that.

If they are big cracks, then you'll want to ramset metal lathe into the concrete to tie the concrete together.

Not to plug our video, but if you're going to lay your own flagstone, the $27 you'll spend on the video will be worth it to you. We show you how to ramset metal lathe.

Great luck!
