Flagstone joints

I'm installing an irregular flag on top of my patio. How large should the joints be and what should I fill them with? If I fill with cement, won't this make it more difficult to replace a damaged stone in the future?

the joints can be as big as you want

Dear Rock,

The joints can be as big as you want, however, professionally you don't want them too big. It just looks amateurish when the joints look too big.

It is harder to replace in concrete than in sand, but hopefully you won't have to replace them.
