Flagstone facing?

We are wanting to make two flagstone pillars but are wondering if there is a way to do them at a lesser price, more specifically will a flagstone facing? Now here is the kicker, we would like the pattern to be horizontal...recommendations?

Dear Stephen,

Sorry for the late response. I've been away for about a month.

You could use strip stone and lay them like you would brick. It would take a little practice, but if you're not too picky, then it could come out alright.
