Flagstone Coping Swimming Pools

We get a fair amount of questions related to flagstone coping swimming pools.

We will do some articles soon about what needs to be done with them.

Until then here is a question from Garland in Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Question:

We are planning to install a flagstone patio around our in ground pool. We have a vinyl liner. There is already an existing concrete slab, and we want to lay the flagstone on top. How do you finish the edging overlapping the pool so that you don't see the cement on the underside? Also, our existing concrete is stained and sealed, but has come up in several places. Will the cement adhere to the existing cement with the stain on it? Thanks!

Answer:

Dear Garland, To cover up the cement joints, you could put a tile border over the concrete that is showing. Tile contractors have done that for us before.

As far as the colored concrete, you'll have no problem laying over it. It's hard for us to judge how bad your concrete is from here. If it's popping up in places, that will eventually cause cracks in your joints.

I would get an opinion from a concrete expert about the worthiness of your slab.

Great luck,

David and Hans
