Different Flagstone Questions

Chris from Buffalo, New York asked:

What are the advantages / disadvantages of flagstone vs. pavers or concrete for use in a walkway? Specifically, is there a difference in the durabitity or appearance of these materials that is frequently shoveled and exposed to ice and salt?

Answer: In your colder climate, in terms of durability and practicality, flagstone might be the least favorable material. Flagstone doesn't hold up as great in the cold weather and you'll hit your snow shovel on edges often.

We would recommend, in terms of practicality, concrete first, brick pavers second, and flagstone third.

Daphne from Ogallala, New Enland asked:

When laying flagstone on top of concrete how thick does the concrete need to be? I have heard 2" or 4".

Answer: We would recommend using at least a 4" thick concrete underneath the stone. That will help prevent the foundation from breaking up and causing many more cracks in the flagstone.
